: The significance of Tova bearing Jeff toward the black horse is that the black horse represents death and she is getting prepared for the death of Jeff by letting him go toward the horse. She wants Jeff and herself to be strong when the moment comes. She knows that there is no way of avoiding it so she him to be prepared for it, even though that is hard to believe, since Jeff doesn’t know there is anything wrong with him.
I think that the entire carousel is symbolic of life itself. the story describes that the stationary carriage is meant for mothers perhaps holding their newborn child, while this black horse carries its rider to the end of life.
