Chris mention's that Jeff, the main character, has a disease and he makes the decision to ride on the black horse. I think the horses color being "black" may symbolize Jeff. Maybe "black" means death and the horse symbolizes that Jeff is sick and will eventually die. I thought is was a little strang and uncaring, as Chris did, that the mother was in denial about her sons illness. Is she trying to hide the fact that he is sick? When she is standing by the carousel, an old women asks her which child is hers. She does not want the old women to know which child is hers. I think she may be ashamed of him and the scars that he has on his face. She lies by saying that she spilled hot water on him and that is why he has those scars. Then she runs to bear her son on the back of the black horse.
