: In "Love Too Long," a short story by Barry Hannah, the narrator is a very unusual character. He narrates the story in the first person form. The reader assumes, through Fred's dialect and speaking style, that he might be abusing drugs or alcohol. Thus, it the hurts the narrator's creditability and the reader doubts his version of instances that take place. The narrator seems to lack self-confidence and admires his wife's success. Instead of realizing his position and motivating himself, he doesn't try to look for work. His attitude is prominently shown as he drinks beer with his friend, Dan, at the end of the story.

Yes, I confused the character with Shepard's discussion! Thank you Professor Humphrey for clarifying that.
