Statistics Playground The purpose of this page is to provide a variety of Web resources for students who are learning or interested in statistics. The famous guru of quality and management, Dr. W. Edwards Deming, talked often about creating a generation of managers, engineers, and scientists that could think "statistically" and understand "variation" and it's ramifications in the decision making process. Hopefully, this page will aid in accomplishing Dr. Deming's goal. As a statistical and management consultant I find the lack of "statistical thinking" to be a major barrier in the solution of recurring business problems. Every manager, engineer, and scientist should be well grounded in statistical thinking. This foundation is essential in every aspect of analysis, design, and assessment of new products, processes, and services. The information in this resource is divided into several sections: Playground Menu Further Reading & Additional Resources Statistical Demos & Tutorials - Resources that help explain and illustrate statistical concepts, methods, and tools. Heavy emphasis is placed on understanding descriptive statistics because of the common need to understand and present data regardless of discipline of study. Web Pages that Perform Statistical Calculations! - Over 280 Links -- And Growing!-The best statistics resource site I have seen so far. It contains links to just about anything you could imagine. Includes a very helpful site called: "Selecting the right kind of analysis". HyperStat Online - An introductory-level hypertext statistics book. Also has links to a variety of other on-line statistics resources. Statistics in Plain English - Easy to follow definitions for mean, standard deviation, etc. for beginners Histogram Demonstration - Graphically demonstrates the impact of choice of the number of intervals in histogram construction. Data from "Old Faithful" is used for the demonstration. Binomial Distribution Demo - Useful for demonstrating the "normal approximation" to the binomial. Statiscope - Summarizes data using and displaying descriptive statistics. You can use your own data or provide the mean and standard deviation and let the program randomly generate a set of numbers that are normally distributed. Statlets - Wonderful tutorial and demos designed for the Web covering a wide variety of statiscal topics including statistical quality control. Applets - More statistical tutorial and demos covering some of the same topics as "Statlets" but other mathematical methods as well. Interesting Web Sites and Discussion Groups - Interesting sites on the Web that demonstrate the use of statistics that will hopefully create interest and understanding of statistics. Web Pages that Perform Statistical Calculations! - Over 280 Links -- And Growing!-The best statistics resource site I have seen so far. It contains links to just about anything you could imagine. Includes a very helpful site called: "Selecting the right kind of analysis". Statistics Network - Statistics site with lots of helpful information. Particularly good for students working on theses and dissertations. Stats Help Board - A threaded discussion site for people with statistics questions. Seems to welcome questions about statistical quality control and other applications of statistics. Student Statistics Listserve - A list server that allows students studying statistics to interact with each other. M & M's Pie Chart - Cute site that uses M & M colors to make pie charts. Longevity Game - Interactive site that demonstrates the use of statistics by predicting your expected life span based on your own personal controlable and uncontrolable life factors (part of commercial site for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance). Top Ten Reasons for Becoming a Statistician . Gallery of Statistics Jokes - Cute jokes for those who have an understanding of statistics. Data Bases and Case Studies - Some sources of data and case studies that show the variety of statistical applications and vast resources available to engineers and scientists Applications of Statistical Methods in Civil Engineering - Eleven examples from the field of civil engineering where variation occurs and statistical method either are or could be applied. In some instances the current practice may not be very sound based on statistical theory. These applications are useful for analyzing and discussing the use of statistics in the practice of civil engineering. Data and Stories - Can look at case stories by topic or by statistical method. A very good site for looking at a variety of statistical methods and applications. Worth exploring. Quality Topic Papers - Short papers by engineering students about various quality related topics. Great for getting a quick lesson on a new topic. Testimonials - A collection of short messages from practitioners emphasizing the importance of statistical methods in professional practice. ***Any one having any testimonials that would fall into this classification are invited to email me with their experience. I will then edit as needed and add it to the list. Thank you.** Email Prof. Rosenkrantz Further Reading and Additional Resources The Teachings of Dr. W. Edwards Deming - No other person has influenced the quality movement more than Dr. Deming. It is essential for managers, engineers, and scientists to understand Dr. Deming's ideas about the importance of understanding variation. A Quality Control Reading List - Suggested reading list from Prof. Bill Parr at University of Tennessee American Statistical Association - A good general resource for statistical publications and activities.
