Project
Description: Each team is
to research a quality or management related topic based
on a book review and supplemental research
and prepare a 20-30 minute PowerPoint presentation to
share with fellow classmates. Topics are assigned as
shown in the table below. If you cannot find enough
material related to your topics, please check with the
instructor for guidance--however, do this early...not
the last few days before your presentation is due. |

Research:
Each project will include the following:
- Each
team member will read the assigned book completely.
The team will become an expert on their assigned
guru/topic. Then the team can decide on and research
topics for a presentation for the class.
- Feel
free to contact professional organizations or societies,
read other books, or conduct interviews with
experts or practitioners from industry who can relate
the important concepts, issues or problems in using
or applying the system or methodologies involved.
By dividing up this responsibility no one person
should have an excessive load.
- Discovery
of useful resources in terms of organizations, books,
journals, websites, annual conferences or other
sources.
- Interaction
on the team discussion board in Blackboard with
other team members to brainstorm and create a presentation
that has value to the class.
- Presention
of the material to the class
- Q
& A, discussion, and suggestions from other
teams in the class during the follow-up class period

Presentation
guidelines:
- Title
slide should show the title of your presentation
at the top and list your team number/name and team
member names, course & quarter, and date.
- Outline
slide should identify major sections of the presentation
and who is presenting for the team. Everyone will
have a part.
- Brief
Biography of the guru if it seems relevant (no more
than 2-3 minutes)
- Overview
of the major philosophy and or concept of the book/guru
(3-5 minutes)
- Major
points or concepts (three or four points and/or
major examples, 2-4 minutes each)
- Relevance
to IME 415, IE, MFE, or the engineering profession
(1-3 minutes)
- The
last slide or two should include references so others
may do further research.(1-2 minutes)
- PowerPoint
Guidelines
- Maximum
of 36 slides including title and references
(This results in a 3 page handout).
- Avoid
using slides full of text (exceptions: very
important quotes--used sparingly)
- Charts,
graphs, and other illustrations should be included
for clarification.
- For
legibility, lists should be short and not more
that 6-8 lines long. Observe the 7x7 Rule: No
more than 7 lines and no more than 7 words per
line.
- Avoid
using similar colors for lettering and background,
even if it looks good on your screen. Either
light letters on dark background, or dark letters
on light background.
- Presentation
Do's and Don'ts- Avoid "Death by PowerPoint"
- Do
be prepared. Rehearse as a group to make sure
timing is OK.
- Don't
read from the PowerPoint slides. Team grade
will be reduced if that happens.
- Don't
read a script. It is unprofessional. Act like
you know what you are talking about

You
will want to use the Internet to do some of their research.
ASQ has a web site at http://www.asq.org. Also check

Submit
PowerPoint presentations via Email on the date shown on the syllabus to Dr. Rosenkrantz. The presentations will be
loaded on a laptop computer for class the day of presentations.
Include
in the text of your email message three multiple choice
questions based on the topic presentation, including
answers.
In
addition, each team member will be required to write
a user book review and post it with the book's review
page on the internet with a bookseller such as Amazon,
Barnes & Noble, Borders, or other major company.
Print off your book review and submit to the instructor
(this is not a team book review, it is an individual
assignment). It is strongly suggested that you have
someone proofread your review before posting it. |

| Deming |
Deming's
second major book was The New Economics
(1994), in which he explained his management
concepts explicitly to managers. Includes Deming's
"Theory of Profound Knowledge" - The
PDCA Cycle (Shewhart and Deming promoted the use
of the cycle). Deming's was famous for the "Funnel
Experiment" and "Red Bead Experiment" |
| Goldratt |
Theory of Constraints (TOC) - Based on the book:
The Goal (1986) by Eliyahu
M. Goldratt. Another expert on the Theory of constraints
is Bill Dettmer. |
| de
Bono |
Six
Thinking Hats (de Bono, 2000) is a classic
book covering the basics of creative thinking.
de Bonos approaches are excellent for use with
teams or situtations where you do not have time
to train the participants extensively. |
| Senge |
Dr.
Peter Senge's "Learning Organization"
(Ref: The Fifth Discipline (1990)
and Fifth Discipline Fieldbook (1994)) Include
the 5 disciplines. Many sub-topics or examples
that can be covered. |
| Collins |
Jim
Collins' "Good to Great (2001)"
- Recent best seller that explains why some companies
have left their competition behind. There are
some common elements within these companies that
are relevant to the culture change required to
implement SPC (although that is not a topic of
the book) |
