Introductory
Assignment - On-line
learning requires you to be familiar with the tools and systems.
This assignment is a mixture of tasks to prepare you for using
internet resources required by the course. It is necessary
for you to carefully read and follow instructions. If you
feel a bit confused, do not get frustrated--just slow down
and relax. This assignment has four parts. Each part is different
and requires different methods for submitting work. |
| #1 |
Ch.
1, 2 |
Accounting
& Breakeven Analysis - Production volume,
cost, and profits are interrelated. Engineers, scientists
and managers must understand this relationship to be of value
to the organization in economic decision making. |
|
#2
|
Ch.
3
|
Interest
& Equivalence - Foundational chapter because
the concepts of "interest" and "compounding"
are introduced. Students who do not master Chapters 3 &
4 will struggle all the way through the course. Use of spreadsheets
is introduced. |
|
#3
|
Ch.
4
|
More
Interest Formulas - Chapter 4 is a continuation
of Chapter 3. We introduce cash flows that are "annual
series" and also "gradients." This assignment
asks you to solve problems using both the factor notation
and tables from the book and some EXCEL functions. |
|
#4
|
Ch.
5
|
Present
Worth Analysis - Chapter 5 introduces the first
of several optional analysis techniques. You should begin
to see how you can analyze and compare alternatives. Some
of the questions chosen should help you with your team project |
|
#5
|
Ch.
6
|
Annual
Worth Analysis - Chapter
6 introduces the second major analysis technique. In some
circumstances annual worth analysis greatly simplifies the
analysis compared to Present Worth Analysis. |
|
#6
|
Ch.
7, 7a
|
Rate
of Return Analysis - Chapters
7 & 7A show how to use a third technique. We compute Rate
of Return (ROR) for projects and for increments between
projects. Chapter 7a deals with mathematical difficulties
sometimes encountered when calculating ROR. |
|
#7
|
Ch.
8, 9
|
Incremental
Analysis and Benefit Cost Ratio Analysis
- Chapter 8 is like similar to the incremental analysis covered
in Chapter 7, but expanded to more than two competing projects.
Chapter 9 introduces some additional techniques, the most
notable being Benefit Cost Ratio analysis. |
|
#8
|
Ch.
11,12 |
Depreciation
& Taxes - Now that we have covered the basics
(Ch. 3 & 4) and learned a variety of analysis methods
(ch. 5-9), we refine the analysis to take taxes into account.
Taxes have a major impact on economic analysis and must be
understood. |
|
#9
|
Ch.
13
|
Replacement
Analysis - Most projects are really replacement
decisions...Should we replace something now, or wait until
later? The analysis methods used in Chapters 5-9 are either
not applicable to that situation, or must be properly adapted. |
