AUTHOR INDEX
At last count 2168 letters, printed between 1881 and 1889, are indexed
below by author. While many are apparently signed by what Editor Otis called
the "true name" of the writer, most bear a pseudonym or initials. Numerous
errors in the spelling of names undoubtedly exist, resulting from an error by
the Times in editing or typesetting, poor quality of the microfilm, sloppy
handwriting on the part of the researcher or a typing error when entering the
data into the computer. Inconsistent typing when entering the data accounts
for an otherwise inexplicable use of case letters where a capital letter was
called for, but the overwhelming task of correcting that error at this late
date was not deemed worthwhile. Where the Times has made an obvious error in
spelling the author's name, that has been silently corrected here. When an
error by the Times is suspected, what is probably the correct name is inserted
in [brackets.]
Some misspelling of names - and occasionally other errors - found in the
two previous indexes have been corrected in this index. "H. D. Barrows"
mistakenly appears as "Burrows" at some point in those two indexes. In self-
defense it ought to be noted that he was also referred to as "Burrows" in a
scholarly historical journal article recounting his role in the founding of
that publication's sponsoring society and as "Burrows" in the major
encyclopedia of Los Angeles history.
In many letters the signature consists only of what appears to be the
initials of the author. While the paper usually placed a period after each
initial, those periods have been omitted here. Sometimes an author would use a
full name on one letter and only initials on another. Labor historians looking
for letters by trade union leader Arthur Vinette should look at both his
surname and under the initials "AV." Readers interested in the complete set of
letters by Frederick M. Shaw should seek them out under Shaw and "FMS." Where
only initials were used at the close of the letter, they are placed in this
index alphabetically according to the first initial. Thus, a letter by Arthur
Vinette signed only AV is listed alphabetically under A, not V, and Shaw's
letters [FMS] would be under F, not S.
Some frequently used initials can be associated with specific names,
although with the possibility of erroneous attribution. HDB is Henry David
Barrows; JHB = Jesse H. Butler; JGD = former governor John G. Downey; EAK =
Elizabeth Kingsbury; MDL = Dorothea Lummis; FMS = Frederick M. Shaw; JCS = John
C. Sherer.
Where the author's name is assumed to be a legitimate proper name, the last
name is placed first: Vinette, Arthur. Whether or not Betsy Bobbett is an
alias she is listed as Bobbett, Betsy. Julius Caesar and Henry Longfellow,
however, are considered to be aliases and are listed under J and H
respectively. A. T. Torney may in fact have been a resident of Los Angeles,
but for this index that name is listed under A and is considered to be a
pseudonym. While Editor Otis insisted on knowing the "true name" before
printing a letter, it is likely that he was fooled on occasion. Modern editors
of the paper's letters column also insist on a genuine signature but
experienced letter writers have found ways to circumvent that requirement. No
instance has been found, however, in which Otis found it necessary to report
that a letter was not in fact from the author who signed it.
In most cases letters by the same individual are listed in chronological
order, but minor computing errors occurred that may disrupt that sequence.
This index is arranged as the others, with the Author's column, in which
the alphabetization occurs, positioned as the fourth column.
With a population approaching 80,000 at the peak of the boom in 1887-88, it
was not unusual for several individuals to have the same, or very similar,
names. J. Mills Davies [JMD] is not to be confused with John M. Davies.
Whether all the letters signed "John Murray" were from the same person is
unknown.
Readers who discover errors are urged, for the benefit of other scholars,
to send corrections to the email address reshaffer@csupomona.edu or mail them
to the home address listed on the web page associated with this project.
[NOTE: Beyond this point the right hand margin is placed at column 140. The "COMMENT" section may not be visible on your screen unless you
make that adjustment.]
