Student Assistant Eligibility Requirements

It is the employing department's responsibility to verify the student's eligibility to work as a student worker each quarter. Student Workers

  • ENROLLMENT - Undergraduate Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6.1 units. Graduate Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 4.0 units. Extended University units and/or units from enrollment at another California State University campus may be included to meet the minimum unit requirement.
  • HOURS - Student workers are allowed to work 20 hours a week while school is in session. If the student has more than one job, the 20-hour rule applies to hours worked in all jobs. Under emergency or other unusual situations , it is permissible for student assistants to work up to 30 hours per week (this exception requires Dean/ Director approval).
  • GPA - Student workers are required to maintain a minimum overall GPA and Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 2.0.

Exceptions

Approved Crop and Farm Units - Students must be enrolled in 1 or more units and may work up to 40 hours per week.
Disabled Students - The unit requirement may be waived for student assistants who are disabled. Contact Payroll Services for additional information at extension 2233.
International Students (F-I and J-I Visa Status) - Employment is restricted to 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. No over max memos are allowed during the regular school session. International Students may work up to 40 hours if they meet the Bridge Student eligibility requirements during their quarter off. These students are appointed in a job classification called nonresident alien student, job code 1868.

Bridge Student Assistants

  • To qualify as a Bridge Student Assistant, students must not be enrolled in any classes and must have been enrolled with the minimum unit requirement of 6.1 units for three continuous quarters prior to taking a quarter off.
  • Bridge student assistants are allowed to work a maximum of 40 hours per week during their one quarter off during the college year (summer through spring). Wages earned during the quarter off are paid in the bridge student assistant classification.
  • In addition to federal and state withholding tax deductions, bridge student assistant earnings are subject to a 7.5% Department of Personnel Administration (DPA) Part-time, Seasonal, Temporary (PST) retirement plan deduction and a 1.45% Medicare tax deduction.

Instructional Student Assistants

Student assistants who perform grading, tutoring or instruction for CSU students for a majority of his/her work hours during the academic term are classified as Instructional Student Assistants (ISA), job code 1150 or 1151 (work-study).

Work Study Student Assistant (On-Campus and Off-Campus)

Work-Study students must meet the criteria set by the Federal College Work-Study Program. For information about this program contact the Office of Financial Aid. Work-study student workers who meet the qualifications of an Instructional Student Assistant will be placed in job code 1151; and those who meet the Bridge Student qualifications will be placed in job code 1875.
