National Conference of State Legislatures The NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the nation's 50 states. This site includes news and analysis of state and federal issues and comparisons of legislation from the states.

State and Local Governments The Library of Congress has gathered a comprehensive listing of sites, including by state.

Governing.com This site from Governing magazine provides links to major newspaper articles about state and local government.

Stateline.org This site links to news and analysis of state and local government.

American Factfinder A US Census search interface that allows you to search for information about your community, retrieving data from the variety of US Census databases.

Fifty States and Capitals Fifty States and Capitals includes US Territories as well as states. Go here for such information as State flags, birds, and etc.

Infoplease.com States This is a good site for basic information on US states - from state flower, song, to population, government, and history.

State and County Quickfacts From the US Census, “Quick, easy access to facts about people, business, and geography.” Good for counties. Click on a US map of the states.

County Business Patterns "County Business Patterns is an annual series that provides subnational economic data by industry."

Business Filings Databases “Almost all of the states make some level of Corporate and Business filings available online.” This site organizes the links by state with annotations describing the scope of each site.

Federation of Tax Administrators For the states, includes state comparisons of tax rates and state and local revenues.

Municiple Codes Web Library (Provided by LexisNexis™) This site has city codes organized by state. Includes county ordinances (laws for counties).
