THE DEPARTMENT 

California State Polytechnic University , Pomona invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Agriculture . Working closely with the faculty and the VP for Academic Affairs, the Dean will advance the College's quality and standing as a learning-centered institution dedicated to students and to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and community engagement.

THE UNIVERSITY: California State Polytechnic University , Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) is one of 23 campuses in The California State University system.  It is located about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles , and is in one of the most dynamic economic and cultural regions in the country. The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg, located within an hour's drive of beaches, mountains and desert.  The university currently has an ethnically diverse student population of about 19,000. Students are enrolled in 65 baccalaureate and 20 master's degree programs with approximately 1,200 tenured, tenure-track, and temporary faculty members. The university is committed to diversifying its faculty and staff and has made educational equity one of its highest priorities.  The mission of the university is to advance learning and knowledge by linking theory and practice in all disciplines, and to prepare students for lifelong learning, leadership, and careers in a changing, multicultural world.

THE COLLEGE: Founded in 1938, the College of Agriculture is the second largest by enrollment of five agricultural colleges in California . It is the sole provider of comprehensive agricultural programs focusing on the needs of the $1 trillion southern California economy and its 21 million people. The College provides a unique integrative approach to agricultural education that recognizes the strong disciplinary interdependencies related to professional orientation and culture, basic societal needs, lifestyles, and social and environmental responsibility.

The College is well positioned to meet the expanding demand for qualified graduates in highly specialized fields within the agricultural, food, fiber, and animal industries . With an enrollment of 1,542, which has grown strongly over the last decade, the College has evolved in step with changing urban agricultural education needs. The Agriculture faculty recognizes the need for further change and has continued to develop a vision for its future.

College distinctions include:

  • second largest accredited animal health science program in North America ;
  • one of the largest animal and veterinary science undergraduate programs in the U.S. ;
  • accredited didactic program in dietetics and internship and one of the largest producers of Registered Dietitians in California ;
  • one of three and the fastest growing food science undergraduate program in California ;
  • one of nine nationally approved Culinology programs in North America ;
  • the only department-based apparel program in California and one of only 13 nationwide to be endorsed by the American Apparel & Footwear Association;
  • $8 million state-of the-art urban agriculture facility, Agriscapes;
  • home of the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center ;
  • one of four Colleges sharing dedicated state funds for the Agricultural Research Initiative.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The Dean heads a College leadership team consisting of five Department Chairs, an Associate Dean, 63 faculty and 35 staff with an annual budget of $8.5 million including grant income. The Dean reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, serves as a member of the Academic Deans' Council, and works closely with others in Academic Affairs. The Dean fosters an environment conducive to academic quality, collegiality, innovation and open discussion, and an appreciation for ethnic, cultural, and social diversity. Within the College, the Dean promotes collaboration, team building and active involvement with the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the community. It is expected that the Dean will create a council of industry, government and education leaders, take the lead in attracting extramural funding, and provide strategies to insure innovation in teaching and learning.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

•  Earned doctorate or equivalent degree and a record of outstanding teaching, research, scholarship, and outreach that merits appointment at full Professor level in one of the College's five departments;

•  at least three years of administrative experience as department chair or equivalent with significant budget management experience;

•  demonstrated commitment to and/or experience in fostering a diverse educational environment;

•  demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership and other constituencies in the university;

•  demonstrated commitment to shared governance within a university setting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience as associate dean or higher level;
  • demonstrated success in attracting and managing extramural funding to enhance educational and research programs;
  • a commitment to extending agricultural applied sciences and technologies to outreach activities and programming;
  • understanding of the College of Agriculture's unique location within a non land grant public comprehensive university in an urban setting;
  • understanding of university-level Retention, Tenure, and Promotion (RTP) processes;
  • a demonstrated dedication to, and understanding of what is required to support faculty research and scholarship ; and an
  • articulated vision for leveraging the State of California Agricultural Research Initiative and the designation of Cal Poly Pomona as a Hispanic Serving Institution to enhance agricultural science, technology, and literacy programs.
