ALL FOR ONE LMS, ONE LMS FOR ALL – I&IT’s Learning department is using the summer to shift the campus to a single learning management system (LMS), Blackboard 7.2. WebCT is on the way out and will be completely gone by fall, 2007. Blackboard version 6 is being replaced by the latest version, 7.2. More than 75% of summer, 2007, classes are already using 7.2. A total of 240 courses have already been set up in the latest Blackboard version. For additional information, see Bb.
WE’RE ACCESSIBLE – I&IT has taken a key role in providing online access to persons with disabilities. We’ve provided accessible web pages, presentations and instructional materials to persons with visual, hearing and other disabilities. All new organizational web pages must be compliant by fall, 2007. I&IT’s Web Development team provides assistance to campus developers who need to make their web sites compliant. WebDev is also developing training for the software that checks web pages for accessibility compliance. For further, see Access.
VOTE ONLINE SECURELY – I&T Web Development has launched BallotBox for online voting. The new application identifies users by their BroncoName and BroncoPassword, the same authentication used for electronic mail, file sharing and entry into secure applications, such as PeopleSoft. Features include:
The university’s Academic Senate is already using BallotBox for its elections, with others around campus expected to replace paper balloting with the new method. “Even if someone were to compromise the database and change votes, the break-in would be detected and in all but the worst cases, the original votes restored,” explained Curtis Clark, Director of I&IT Web Development. “BallotBox is a state-of-the-art application that allows fast, easy, and secure voting online. It’s confidential and efficient.” For more, see vote.
ONLINE CLASS PILOT MOVES INTO 2ND PHASE – The DOLCE program initiative (Designing Online Learning-Centered Environments) is moving into its second year. So far, DOLCE has been successful in increasing interest in online classes. In the spring quarter, 19 DOLCE classes were taught completely online while another 125 "blended" or "hybrid" classes combined a mix of live attendance and online teaching. During the fall and winter quarters, more than 1,000 students participated in six pilot DOLCE courses. Initial evaluations show students achieved higher grades in the hybrid and online classes than their peers who took the same class and instructor in the more traditional mode. For more, visit DOLCE.
CONNECT TO ONE ANOTHER – I&IT Learning’s Connect pilot continues to expand. Adobe Connect has been useful for collaborative efforts in teaching, meeting and technical support. Learning is currently moving content from Breeze, Connect’s predecessor, to the new Connect server. So far, more than 200 users have joined the Connect campus circle. Recently, I&IT Applications’ Tim Raymond led a CSU-wide, online meeting with Connect in which more than 50 users participated. To set up or connect to a Connect site, go to connect.
COMMENCEMENT VIEWED WORLDWIDE – Once again, I&IT Learning’s world-class streaming video team allowed the June, 2007, graduation ceremonies to be viewed worldwide. As of early July, 2007, nearly 30,427 online viewings of commencement were tallied. Viewers came from 89 countries and 49 states. To view the graduation ceremonies, see graduate.
SMARTER CLASSROOMS, BETTER EQUIPPED PROFESSORS – The Learning Centered Technology Initiative continues to speed forward. In the last six months, I&IT’s Operations department has added four new “Smart” classrooms equipped with the latest technology. The new gear includes laptop connections, projector, motorized screen, computer, document camera, VCR, speakers and a podium with easy to use controls and connections. Nineteen more classrooms are scheduled to be upgraded during summer, 2007. Some 59 classrooms have been modernized since the project began more than three years ago. On the faculty side, I&IT Support is currently arranging new Dell and Macintosh laptops for the more than 40 new tenure-track faculty who are joining the university this fall. To date, I&IT has provided more than 600 laptops to tenured faculty. Want to know more? See LCT.
FINDING THE RIGHT DATA– Data Warehouse, the new version of BroncoData (not to be confused with BroncoDirect), is in development. Among the features of the new data warehouse reporting system are accessibility, ease of use, a new tool for requesting reports and a "Data Dictionary." This last feature is a tool that helps identify terms such as active students, continuing students, leave of absence, academic year and provide authoritative definitions. The Report Library is another new feature that helps find existing reports. The much-requested “Active Student” report offers academic and demographic information on students and will be easy to search and manipulate. I&IT is offering demonstrations and seeking feedback this summer as we move from prototype to production. For more information, contact our Data Warehouse Administrator, Diane Carter at 909.979.6335.
VISTA ON THE WAY – I&IT is leading a university-wide project to prepare the campus for Vista and Office 2007, Microsoft’s latest desktop software. In July, 2007, I&IT is providing technical support training off-site to more than 50 campus technicians. Working with Organizational Development and Training, we’re arranging classes for end users of the new software. We’ve also published several ehelp pages on the new Windows software at Vista.
INTRANET UPGRADING – I&IT is continuing to make progress on our phased approach to our Intranet replacement project. The following services have recently been migrated to our newer environment:
We are currently working on the R&D, design, and implementation for the remaining services.
PEOPLE NEWS – H’Sundiata Keita, I&IT’s Operations Director, is retiring after 9 years with our university. “H,” as he is known, ends a total state service of 17 years with us, Cal State Long Beach and UC Irvine. We all wish H the best in his retirement, and we’re sure he’ll share his singing talent at local Karaoke clubs in the greater Los Angeles area…Congratulations to two I&IT staffers who received their bachelor’s degrees. April McKettrick, a Multimedia Developer in our Learning Department, and Brian DeWolf, a network administrator in our Systems unit, both walked proudly with the more than 3,500 graduates in June, 2007.
