A Computer Information Systems senior project team consisting of I&IT and Cal Poly Pomona student assistants developed interactive multimedia presentations to assist students, faculty, staff and prospective members of the campus community with Cal Poly Pomona's BroncoDirect system.

The Challenge

After consulting with Candie McDougall (Cal Poly Pomona Helpdesk Lead), several students, faculty and staff members, there seemed to be a well-developed yet static set of online support tools provided by the eHelp website.  The eHelp website, a website devoted to assisting the campus community with common technological issues, provided information but not enough explanation.

The senior project team's challenge was to develop several online tutorials in ten weeks while testing and learning several software tools to complete the project.

The Solution

The senior project team with the help of I&IT Learning, I&IT Support and the Registrar's Office brainstormed and developed several online tutorials using Adobe Breeze and Captivate.

Besides developing useful tutorials for the campus community, the other main goal for this project was to create a framework for using Breeze and Captivate in a university environment.  As part of the project, the team developed documentation and training materials that are used to train staff members of I&IT Support on how to use Breeze and Captivate for training or teaching purposes.

First, the senior project team worked with several departments on campus to gather requirements for the project. The concept seemed simple - to provide interactive and descriptive tutorials of how to use one of the campus' most frequently used interface, BroncoDirect. I&IT Learning recommended two products for the senior project team to use: Adobe Captivate and Adobe Breeze.

Thanks to the efforts of I&IT Learning, the senior project team was able to take their concept into a reality. I&IT Learning's Breeze Coordinator April McKettrick provided the students with training for the two products and the Studio 6 facilities for developing the tutorials.

The senior project team also utilized the help of Studio 6 ITA Brian Rigazzi for the voiceovers you hear in the eHelp tutorials.

The eHelp tutorial project continues today with other senior project teams using these software tools, the Studio 6 facilities and the assistance of I&IT Learning team members' April McKettrick and Daniel Smith.

“This project has generated a great deal of interest from several Cal Poly Pomona organizations. I believe that this project and the many new projects that emerge as a result of [these] efforts will greatly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the information that I&IT
will provide to current and prospective faculty, staff, and students”
