Off-campus Wireless Networking – Overview

The use of wireless networks has been growing rapidly in recent years. This is largely due to the ease of use, mobility and cheap cost associated with wireless networking. You may also know wireless networking by terms such as WiFi or 802.11 networking. Wireless cards come standard on most modern notebook computers.

While wireless networks can be very useful, it is important to understand that there are security risks if used improperly. This webpage has been setup to help you properly secure your wireless network.

Please note that these pages apply to OFF-campus wireless networks ONLY. I&IT is responsible for all wireless access points and wireless networking on the Cal Poly Pomona campus. Wireless access points set up on campus, including the on-campus student housing areas, by individuals outside of I&IT are not allowed because of possible security and interference risks, and under some circumstance the equipment may be confiscated.

If you have questions about setting up a wireless network, please read through the following pages.
