Course Management Questions: Current Courses

Q. I heard that all new courses have been auto-created and I don't need to submit a course request, but why can't I see my new course?

A. We auto-create all Blackboard courses using course information available in BroncoDirect a few weeks before each quarter begins. If you have recently been given the role of Instructor for a course in BroncoDirect, you may have missed our scheduled course auto-creation.

To set yourself as the instructor for a course in Blackboard, submit a Help Desk ticket or stop by the I&IT Help Desk to assist you.

The I&IT Help Desk is located in Building 1, Room 100. It is open Monday - Thursday, 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM and Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (excluding state holidays).

Q. I can see my new course has been auto created, but the content from the previous course has not been transferred. What should I do?

A. There are two ways to copy material from one course to another:

    1. If a previous course from which you wish to copy material already exists in Blackboard, we encourage you to utilize Blackboard's Course Copy tool. A full tutorial on the use of the Course Copy tool can be found on our eHelp page at (link opens in a new window):

      http://www.csupomona.edu/~ehelp/blackboard/faculty/step_bb7/courseoptions/coursecopy.html.

    2. If the course you wish to copy material from is a year or more old, the course will automatically be archived. In this case, fill out our Copy Course form at (link opens in a new window):

      http://www.csupomona.edu/~iit/learning/form_blackboard-courserequest.shtml.

Q. Why can't my students see my course?

A. When auto-creating all courses during our Quarterly Maintenance periods just a few weeks before the beginning of the quarter, all Blackboard courses are set as unavailable to the students. To make your course available, see the tutorial on Course Availability (link opens in a new window):

http://www.csupomona.edu/~ehelp/blackboard/faculty/step_bb7/courseoptions/courseavailability.htm.

Course Management Questions: Technical

Q. Some of my students reported a problem with submitting or uploading an assignment?

A.When using Firefox 3 browser, the students who are trying to upload an assignment file will receive a "Please enter a valid file" message. While this issue will be fixed in the newer Blackboard version, a workaround can be found at http://www.shsu.edu/~ucs_www/webdev/blackboard/blog/2008/07/blackboard-and-firefox-3-assignment.html

Alternatively, they can also use Internet Explorer of Firefox.

Q. Which files can I upload?

A. Each course, by default, is given a 20 MB quota. This course quota can be used to accommodate students' assignments, tests and files. Each faculty member also has an additional 20 MB available within their Content Collection.

To make the best use of space, use the Content Collection to store course files, such as PowerPoint presentations, syllabi, course videos and/or assignment outlines.

For instructions on using the Content Collection system, see our full eHelp tutorial at (link opens in a new window):

http://www.csupomona.edu/~ehelp/blackboard/faculty/stepbystep_bb7.html#content_collection.

Q. I am receiving a "Quota Exceeded" message? How can I increase my storage quota?

A. Each course, by default, is given a 50 MB quota.

Users with special needs may request a quota increase by submitting a Help Desk ticket to the Help Desk. Be sure to specify which course or which content collection you would like to increase.

Online Attendance Questions

Q. Why can’t I see a student who just added my class?

A. A daily synchronization is run between Blackboard and BroncoDirect to update the student roster in Blackboard and to accommodate students who have added or dropped a course. Check your online roster the day after the student has added your course through BroncoDirect.

Q. Why can’t my Open University student access my Blackboard course?

A. To ensure CEU students have access to Blackboard courses in a timely manner, implement the following instructions:

Registration

After signing the Open University Petition and Prerequisite Form brought to you by the student on the first day of class, encourage the student to submit the forms to the CEU office in building 220-C and to pay their fees as soon as possible. Once the CEU receives the forms and payment, the student will be entered into the system for account creation.

Bronco Account Activation

After the student’s account has been created, the student must activate his/her Bronco account by visiting (link opens in a new window):

https://win.webdev.csupomona.edu/idm/user_claim.aspx.

For instructions, please visit (link opens in a new window):

http://www.csupomona.edu/~ehelp/idm/account-claiming.html

Blackboard Enrollment

Once the student’s Bronco account is activated, the instructor will need to manually enroll the students into their Blackboard courses.

For instructions on manually enrolling students into a Blackboard course, visit (link opens in a new window):
