Golf Classic Raises $27,000 For Scholarships

Former
National Football League star and Cal Poly Pomona football
coach Roman Gabriel showed recently he can still fill
a golf tournament.
Gabriel helped attract a sellout crowd to the Athletic
Department’s 25th Annual Bronco Golf Classic. The
18-hole tournament, which Gabriel founded, drew a full
field of 144 golfers and raised $27,000 in scholarship
money for Cal Poly Pomona student-athletes.
"Scholarships are an integral part of our program,"
Julie Hall, director of development, said. “In many
cases, an athletic scholarship is the only way students
can afford an education and we’re fortunate to provide
such a precious gift to our student-athletes.”
The Via Verde Country Club in San Dimas hosted this year’s
tournament, which raised about $6,500 more than last year’s
event. The tournament has raised more than $600,000 for
student-athlete scholarships since it was founded in 1980.
Student-athletes served as caddies for each foursome.
The foursome of Jim Hall, Dave Hopkins, Darrell Palmer
and Ron Paschall took first place with a score of 15 under
par 57, which was one stroke better than the second and
third place teams.
John Jenkins, Tim Mayeda, Ed Barnes and John Kellogg took
second place while Joe Lowden, Mark Marcus, Glenn Shenker
and Harold Young placed third. Athletic Hall of Fame inductee
and Cal Poly Pomona alumnus Romualdo Ochoa was the putting
contest winner
.
"This was the best golf tournament I've been involved
with since I've been associated with Cal Poly Pomona ,"
David Loud, Golf Tournament Chair, said . "The support
from the community has always been great, but Roman's
return gave this a year's tournament a special boost.
We appreciated Mr. Gabriel coming back to help us with
the Silver Anniversary of the Bronco Golf Classic. We're
looking forward to working with Roman at future events"
Founded as the “Roman Gabriel Pro-Celebrity Golf
Tournament,” the event raised money for the Bronco
football program. When the fundraiser first started, NFL
and television celebrities supported Gabriel’s fundraising
efforts. Three years later, it evolved into the Bronco
Golf Classic, raising money for all of the department’s
sports programs.
Gabriel, who was the 1969 NFL MVP for the Los Angeles
Rams and four-time Pro Bowl selection, said he would like
to attend next year’s event and continue his support
of the tournament. |

night and the enthusiastic crowds helped the Broncos
post important wins over Cal State Stanislaus. A record

A free
baseball clinic and doubleheader marked Cal Poly Pomona’s
second annual Youth Baseball Saturday, May 4, 2002.
The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team hosted a free clinic
for children ages 8-12 on Scolinos Field. A doubleheader
followed the clinic.
“This is our way of reaching out to our surrounding
community,” Cal Poly Pomona Head Coach Mike Ashman
said. “It’s important that these kids are exposed
to a college environment and know that they can be here
one day.”
Clinic space was limited to the first 50 children who
register (pre-registration was required). Everyone was
welcome to attend the games. Children ages 12 and under
were admitted to both games free throughout the day.
Several Bronco team members were honored, before the games,
for their contributions and commitment to the baseball
team and the Athletic Department. Among the honorees was
be senior catcher Gregor Connors, who was awarded the
Daniel Andrews Baseball Endowment Scholarship in the amount
of $1,000.
“My baseball players are good role models for the
kids and we appreciate the additional fans,” Ashman
said.
Clinic attendees received free soda, Kettle Korn and a
certificate of completion for their work. All children
attending the clinic were entered in a drawing to win
authentic Bronco baseball jerseys and baseballs autographed
by the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team. There were also
special raffles in which two children won the opportunity
to assist the Bronco baseball team as batboys or girls.

Girls & Women In Sports Day (last held on Saturday,
Feb 15, 2003):
The Cal Poly Pomona Athletic Department celebrates “National
Girls and Women in Sports Day” every year. Established
in 1987, National Girls & Women in Sports Day calls
attention to the positive influence of sports and fitness
participation and seeks to advance the struggle for
equality and access for women in sports. This year’s
celebration was complete with a basketball clinic conducted
by Cal Poly Pomona student-athletes. The clinic was
offered free of charge to girls ages 8 through 12 throughout
the community. Cal Poly Pomona student athletic trainer
Heidi Lopez also hosted a health and nutrition discussion
in. Children who attended the clinic were treated to
pizza and drinks, received a National Girl’s and
Women in Sports Day t-shirt and were admitted to the
women’s basketball game free. The commemorative
day serves to bring national attention to the achievements
of women athletes, and to the challenges and issues
facing females in sports.
Homecoming
(last held on Friday, Feb 21, 2003):
The Broncos celebrated their Homecoming as the men’s
and women’s basketball teams continued their quest
for a CCAA title when they took on Cal State Stanislaus.
A homecoming dance followed the men’s game in the
University Union.
Night of Champions (last held
on Saturday, Feb 2, 2002): Because of the
recent addition to our national championship trophies,
the Athletic Department set aside a night to honor all
of its championship teams as well as the coaches who
led them. Bronco Athletics invited more than 2,000 alumni
to join in on honoring all 12 of its national championship
teams as the men’s and women’s basketball
teams took on conference powerhouse Cal State Bakersfield.
There was a special reception for student-athlete alumni
in the Darlene May Gym between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. Alumni
who were part of a championship team were recognized
in a ceremony during the men’s halftime.
Banner
Unveiling (last held on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002):
Because the Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball
team was crowned National Champions for the 2001-2002
season, the Athletic Department decided to hold a “Banner
Unveiling” ceremony. The event was promoted in
The Daily Bulletin, The Inland Valley Times, The Poly
Post, the university Bulletin, through e-mail, with
fliers, through campus distribution and with postcards.
Pomona
Unified School District Night (last held on Saturday,
Feb. 3, 2001):
The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team did this
for the first time last year and hopes to make it an
annual event. Last year’s team went to local Pomona
elementary schools, during the course of a week, to
read and answer questions about college for the children.
At the end of the meeting, the basketball players invited
the children and their families to attend a specific
home game. The night was entitled “Pomona Unified
School District Night” and free passes, for the
chosen game, were dropped off at those schools.
Cal
Poly Associates Appreciation Night (last held on Jan.
27, 2001): The Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics honors those who have a commitment to excellence
in athletics and academics. The members of Cal Poly
Associates, Inc. are invited to a social, usually hosted
by the university president and his wife at the Manor
House. After the reception, members are encouraged to
attend the basketball games in Kellogg Gym.
Girl
Scout / Boy Scout Night (last held on Saturday, Dec.
16, 2001): The Athletic Department, in conjunction
with the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, decide on a
mutually convenient night to invite local troops to
attend our basketball games. The troops are recognized
over the loud speaker and on our electronic board during
the game. Children that arrive in uniform along with
their troop leaders are admitted free.
Youth
Soccer Night (last held on Oct. 6, 2000):
Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and women’s soccer
teams pick a home game during the season in which they
extend invitations to local youth soccer teams. Those
who attend are admitted free of charge and sometimes
given free pizza for their group. About four of the
children are randomly selected to be ball girls/boys
for that evening’s games. |
