Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program Overview

The Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program provides financial assistance to graduate students. The purpose of the program is to increase the pool of individuals with the qualifications, motivation, and skills to teach the diverse student body in the California State University by providing financial assistance to doctoral students who show promise of becoming strong candidates for CSU instructional faculty positions. Through the CDIP the CSU offers loans to full-time students who are pursuing doctoral degrees and who are interested in a teaching career at a CSU campus. Specifically, the program provides:

Loans of up to $10,000 per year up to a total of $30,000
Loan forgiveness: 20 percent of the loan is forgiven for each year of full-time postdoctoral teaching in the CSU.
Part-time postdoctoral teaching in the CSU may also be considered for partial loan forgiveness.
Support from a CSU faculty advisor

Selection Criteria

Potential for success in a CSU instructional faculty position
Plan of support by a CSU tenure-track faculty member or academic department
Academic discipline - Primary consideration will be given to candidates whose proposed area of study falls where CSU campuses anticipate the greatest difficulty in filling potential future instructional faculty positions. One relevant source when evaluating this criterion is the CSU report on Faculty Recruitment Survey, which presents recent information on the number of tenure-track searches and appointments in various disciplines throughout the CSU system. Selection Process

Applications must be submitted to a CSU campus. A campus committee evaluates applications and recommends the most qualified applicants to the campus president. The president forwards campus nominations to the chancellor.
Applications of all nominees forwarded by the campuses will be reviewed by a systemwide committee that makes recommendations to the chancellor.
