The University Writing Center, after almost three years in Building 1, has moved back to a newly renovated location on the second floor of the library. Our new space is in room 2919, right where the old main entrance used to be. After you go up the escalator to the second floor, turn left. During summer 2008 our hours will be Monday-Thursday, 8:00-6:00.
What is English 002?--English 002 consists of weekly group tutorials organized by the University Writing Center. Students should go to the Writing Center, located in Room 15-2919 (Library, second floor), to sign up for a group at a convenient time.
Each group meeting will provide opportunities for students to share and discuss their writing projects in addition to covering topics and materials designed to enhance success in English 104. Progress in 002 will be tracked through short quizzes on the Blackboard site for the course. Instructors in the English 104 course will not know which students are also in the 002 course.
Why is English 002 a good thing?--Students with English Placement Test (EPT) scores from 147-150 must register for both English 002 and English 104 (or English 002 and IGE 120, if they are in the Integrated General Education program). In the past, students with these scores would be placed in English 096, “Basic Communication Skills.” However, starting in fall 2008, students with these scores will be allowed to register for English 104, “Freshman English I,” provided that they also register for English 002, “College Composition Lab.”
Students in the English 002/104 combination are subject to E.O. 665, which means that they have to take the combination in their first quarter of attendance (they will be dropped from all courses if they do not) and they must pass the course in the first year.
The following link leads to a list of groups scheduled for English 002. Find the section number of your English 104 or IGE 120 course. There will be at least two group times for your section. If no existing group will fit your schedule, we will try to make other arrangements, so don't worry. You will have to come to the Writing Center to sign up.
