Infrastructure Terminal Resources Project (ITRP)

The Infrastructure Terminal Resources Project (ITRP) is a collaboration of the CSU Chancellor’s Office, I&IT and the university’s College and departmental technicians to bring faster networking to the campus community.

Under the direction of I&IT Systems, the ITRP converted about 60% of the campus from old and slow network wiring and switching equipment to 100 Megabits per second connections, resulting in a ten-fold increase in the speed of data transfer. ITRP also added 45 wireless access points to the campus.

The last of the new ITRP equipment was installed and activated on December 16, 2005, officially bringing the project to a successful close.

ITRP involved a two-step process. First, new wiring had to be installed in the buildings designated for upgrade under the program.  Second, connections had to be made from the wiring in the walls to the computers themselves.

The actual switch from the old network equipment to the new network gear was either a “cold swap,” which meant that the new equipment was put in place while the old equipment was still running – thereby posing the least potential for disruption of service, or a “hot swap,” which was just the opposite – the old equipment had to be taken offline before the new equipment could be activated.

The new networks are configured in a specific way, which is often different from the configuration of the old networks. Specifically, more users will obtain IP addresses automatically through DHCP, rather than having assigned IP addresses. And the Virtual Local Access Networks (vLANs) have been reconfigured to provide greater stability and safety.
