Overview

BroncoData went active Summer Quarter 2004 in conjunction with the PeopleSoft Student Administration System implementation as a means of responding to the confusion about available data and how to access it that would likely occur following the switchover. The replacement for Banner reporting, BroncoData is now the portal to all reporting for Cal Poly Pomona faculty/staff.

The goal of BroncoData is to empower faculty/staff by providing access to reporting that is digital, on-demand, flexible, self-served, computerized, centralized, and comprehensive.

BroncoData is meant to speed up “data mining” and increase the usefulness of the reported results.

Data mining—also known as knowledge-discovery in databases (KDD)—is the practice of automatically searching large stores of data for patterns. To do this, data mining uses computational techniques from statistics and pattern recognition.

Two straightforward definitions of data mining (courtesy of Wikipedia.org) are: “The nontrivial extraction of implicit, previously unknown, and potentially useful information from data”; and “The science of extracting useful information from large data sets or databases.”

In short, in a world where information is as valuable (if not far more valuable) than gold and time is of the essence, the faster you can get the information you need and the more reliable it is, the more time you have to spend on everything else. BroncoData makes mining faster and more rewarding.

Bronco Data Reporting

The types of reports available in BroncoData are as follows:

Existing reports

Special data requests

NOTES :

BroncoData vs. BroncoDirect

BroncoData:

BroncoDirect:

In short, if an instructor needs to access a class roster (i.e. the names of the students enrolled in a class), she would use BroncoDirect.

On the other hand, if a department chair needs to know the number of students enrolled in a class to decide if sections should be added or deleted, she would use BroncoData.

Applying for access to BroncoData

To apply for access to BroncoData you must fill out a PeopleSoft Student Administration System User Access Request Form (PSAS User Access Request Form) which can be downloaded from the following link: http://www.csupomona.edu/%7Epsp/SA_UserRequest_Form.doc .

For reference, a sample request form is viewable here: http://www.csupomona.edu/~broncodata/sampleRequest_Form.doc .

The PSAS User Access Request Form—which verifies that data will be legitimately used to fulfill job requirements—is typically filed upon hiring, and normally entails access to BroncoDirect, but not BroncoData.

If you are able to access BroncoDirect then you need only apply for access to BroncoData by submitting a PSAS User Access Request Form to:

BroncoData Administrators
Institutional Research, Assessment and Planning
98-T5-23

If you are not currently able to access BroncoDirect you can apply for access to BroncoData and BroncoDirect by submitting a completed PSAS User Access Request Form to:

Rose Kukla
Student Administration Functional Implementation Manager
98-T4-20

You will be notified by email as soon as your BroncoData account has been created.

Configuring Hyperion to work with Microsoft Security Updates

Some Hyperion customers have experienced problems after applying Microsoft Security Update MS05-052 (KB896688). The problem may manifest itself through failures in loading ActiveX controls in components such as Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, Windows Control Panel, etc. This issue has been experienced by some customers on machines where Hyperion products have been installed.

After you install cumulative security update 896688, a Web page that contains an ActiveX control does not load as expected. This may affect Microsoft applications such as Internet Explorer, Control Panel, Windows Explorer and Hyperion applications that are hosted within Internet Explorer. For these applications, folders may not appear correctly if Web View is enabled.

You may also receive an error message that is similar to the following when you try to open Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel:

Object doesn't support this property or method.

Additionally, folders may not appear correctly if Web View is enabled.

This issue can occur if subkeys are missing from the registry.

This problem is due to the “defense in depth” changes introduced by Microsoft in its cumulative security update KB896688. On Nov. 2, 2005 Microsoft updated this cumulative security update: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS05-052.mspx.

Following Steps 1-10 below will resolve the potential for Microsoft Security Update MS05-052 (KB896688) to cause errors in the operation of Hyperion while still preserving the security changes of the cumulative update.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are an inexperienced computer user and do not feel comfortable with altering your own registry—which, if done incorrectly, can be extremely harmful to your computer—it is highly recommended that you contact your department tech for assistance before attempting to correct this problem.

Advanced computer users may resolve this issue by adding the required subkeys to the registry as follows:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type Notepad.exe, and then click OK.
  2. Paste the following text in the Notepad document:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}] @="ClassMoniker" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\InprocServer32] @="ole32.dll" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProgID] @="clsid" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\CLSID] @="{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"
  3. Click File, and then click Save.
  4. In the Save in box, click Desktop.
  5. In the File name box, type KB909889.reg.
  6. In the Save as type box, click All Files, and then click Save.
  7. Click File, and then click Exit.
  8. On the desktop, double-click KB909889.reg, and then click Yes to add the information to the registry.
  9. Click OK to confirm that the information in the KB909889.reg file has been added to the registry.
  10. Restart the computer.

Submitting a Report Request

First, review the list of available reports by clicking Reports Available on the BroncoData main page.

Second, review the list of current report requests by clicking on Request a Report on the BroncoData main page and then clicking Report Queue. A new window will open; scroll down to view the report queue.

Third, click Request A Report and the report request form will open in a new window.

If and when you do submit a report request make sure to check with your department to see if departmental reports can be consolidated (this will prevent multiple users from ordering identical reports).

It is also important to provide as much detail about the report you are requesting as you can (if possible, provide a sample report).

When requesting a report please keep in mind the following:
