2004 Overall Record: 12-9. 2004 CCAA Record: 7-4

BRONCOS BEAT OTTERS; FALL TO SEAWOLVES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team snapped its three-match losing streak with a win Friday at Cal State Monterey Bay, but couldn’t sustain the momentum and fell to Sonoma State on Saturday in Rohnert Park. The Broncos remain in third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Broncos started the trip with a 30-25, 30-16, 30-22 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in the Broncos’ first-ever match in the Otter Sports Center. Allison Anderson (Jr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) led the way with 13 kills and five blocks. Kellie Francis (Jr., Chino, Don Lugo HS) added 12 kills, eight blocks and 19 digs, while Casey Riedel (So., Saugus, Saugus HS) had 12 kills, six assists and five digs. Elizabeth Defoort (Jr., Glendora, Citrus College) had 10 kills and three blocks. On Saturday, the Broncos captured the first game against Sonoma State, only to see the Seawolves rally for a 26-30, 30-21, 30-21, 30-26 victory in Seawolf Gym. Anderson had a team-high 15 kills for the Broncos to go along with six blocks, while Francis had 14 kills, 17 digs and two blocks. Defoort added 10 kills and three blocks. Megan Meenan (Sr., Hermosa Beach, El Camino College) had a team-high 23 digs and one service ace, while Riedel had seven kills, 19 digs and three blocks. Emily Kennedy (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) had 47 assists, nine digs and two service aces.

BRONCOS TO HOST BIG CONFERENCE MATCHES THIS WEEKEND: The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team will look to take command in the race for third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with key matches against top rivals this weekend in Darlene May Gym. The Broncos will host Cal State Bakersfield on Friday and Cal State L.A. on Saturday. The Broncos beat both teams on the road earlier this season and hold a one-game edge on Cal State Bakersfield and a two-game edge on Cal State L.A. heading into this weekend’s contests. The Broncos will play their next four matches in Darlene May Gym, including contests on Oct. 29 against Cal State Stanislaus and Oct. 30 against Chico State.

MEN'S SOCCER: BRONCOS END WEEKEND WITH THRILLER OVER GATORS

2004 Overall Record: 5-9-1. 2004 CCAA Record: 3-6-1.

BRONCOS WORK EXTRA FOR WIN OVER SAN FRANCISCO STATE: The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team had to work overtime on Sunday, but it was worth the effort in a 2-1 win over San Francisco State at Kellogg Field. Ben Van der Fluit (Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS) scored the first goal of his Cal Poly Pomona career when he scored 7:13 into the extra period to give the Broncos the win. Joe DeVito (Sr., Walnut Creek, De La Salle HS) got the ball in to Andrew Pierce (Jr., Oswego, N.Y., Oswego HS), who flicked the ball toward an onrushing Van der Fluit, who drilled a shot past the San Francisco State goalie. The Broncos enjoyed a 14-9 edge in shots and had all three attempts in overtime. Matthew Barker (So., La Verne, Bonita HS) opened the scoring with a goal in the 29th minute. Dawit Berhanu (Fr., Ontario, Montclair HS) started the scoring play with a nice run down the left sideline. He passed the ball to Pierce, who flicked it to Barker, who nailed a shot just inside the left post. San Francisco State tied the game in the 62nd minute, but the Broncos got the game-winner in overtime. Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) made two saves in goal for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona opened the weekend with a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to Sonoma State on Friday night at Kellogg Field. A clearing attempt was stolen by a Sonoma State player and he dribbled in alone and kicked the ball into an empty net with just 44 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. Cal Poly Pomona had sent the game into overtime on a goal by Peter Wallace (Sr., San Martin, De Anza JC) with 2:02 remaining in regulation. Darren Ross (Northridge, El Camino HS) started the play with a throw-in to Berhanu, who flicked the ball into the box. Wallace took the pass and traffic and was able to send the ball into the corner of the net.

BRONCOS TO FACE UC SAN DIEGO, THEN HOST CAL STATE L.A.: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team will travel to La Jolla to face UC San Diego on Wednesday, Oct. 20 before returning home to entertain Cal State L.A. on Saturday, Oct. 23. The Saturday match will be part of Youth Night at Kellogg Field. Youth teams will be admitted free of charge to the game if wearing a team jersey. The Broncos have four matches remaining this season, two of them at home: the Oct. 23 match against Cal State L.A. and an Oct. 30 contest against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: BRONCOS RALLY TO BEAT SAN FRANCISCO STATE

2004 Overall Record: 6-6-3. 2004 CCAA Record: 5-2-3

BRONCOS TAKE OVER SECOND WILDCARD SPOT: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team settled for a tie with Sonoma State on Friday and then rallied for a key 2-1 win over San Francisco State on Sunday in matches played at Kellogg Field. The Broncos, after an 0-4 start, are 6-2-3 in their last 11 matches. Cal Poly Pomona is currently in third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and holds the second wildcard spot by two points over Sonoma State. The two division winners and the next two point-scorers will earn bids to the CCAA Championship Tournament. The Broncos are the only team to qualify for all six of the previous conference tourneys. The Broncos started the weekend with a 2-2 tie against Sonoma State. Sonoma State opened the scoring with a goal in the 24th minute, but the Broncos quickly tied the game in the 32nd minute when Nicole Munoz (Sr., Claremont, Mt. San Antonio College) blasted a clearing attempt through traffic and into the Sonoma State net. It was Munoz’ first collegiate goal. The Broncos then took the lead in the 74th minute with a beautiful goal by Jacqueline Ragudos (Fr., San Diego, University of San Diego HS), who curved a shot that bounced off the inside of the far post and into the net. The Seawolves tied the game, though, in the 81st minute and the team battled through two scoreless overtime periods. Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) made five saves for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona then picked up a much-needed 2-1 win over San Francisco State on Sunday. The Broncos started slowly and trailed, 1-0, at halftime after being outshot, 7-2. Cal Poly Pomona dominated the second half and enjoyed an 8-1 edge in shots. Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) tied the game in the 53rd minute when she headed in a cross from Chelsea Hipley (Jr., Sacramento, Woodcreek HS). The game-winner was scored in a flurry of action right in front of the San Francisco State goal. A shot by Ragudos was saved, but Araujo was first to get to the rebound. She tapped the ball over to Rodriguez, who knocked the ball into an empty net with three minutes remaining in the game.

BRONCOS PREPARE FOR TWO KEY MATCHES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team will play a pair of key California Collegiate Athletic Association contests this week. The Broncos will be at CCAA South Division leader UC San Diego on Wednesday and then entertain wildcard contender Cal State L.A. on Saturday at Kellogg Field. The Broncos are bidding to remain the only team to reach every California Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament and are in a tight battle for a wildcard spot this season. Cal Poly Pomona currently holds the second wildcard spot by two points over Sonoma State with four matches remaining. Cal Poly Pomona has two more home games on its schedule: Saturday, Oct. 23 against Cal State L.A. and Saturday, Oct. 30 against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

CROSS COUNTRY: BRONCOS READY FOR CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

CAL POLY POMONA WILL HOST CONFERENCE MEET ON SATURDAY: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and women’s cross country teams will host the California Collegiate Athletic Association championships at Prado Park this Saturday, Oct. 23. The women’s race will be run at 9 a.m. and the men’s race is set to begin at 10 a.m. Going into this week, Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s team is ranked third in the West Region, while the women are fourth. The top three teams in the region will advance to the NCAA Championships on both sides. Heading into the conference championships, Chico State, which is No. 1 in the region in both men’s and women’s divisions, is the favorite with UC San Diego, second in the region in both divisions and Cal Poly Pomona regarded as the top challengers. Chico State won both conference titles last season. Daniel Rojas (Sr., El Monte, Mt. San Antonio College) and Mark Batres (Jr., Rowland Heights, Don Bosco Tech HS) are among the individual favorites for the men’s race. Batres won the 2002 CCAA title as a freshman, while Rojas has wins already in two big invitationals this year. David Cerecerez (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Mt. San Antonio College) and James Tawney (Jr., Barstow, Barstow HS) are returning All-CCAA runners for the Bronco men. On the women’s side, Christina Jimenez (So., Apple Valley, Granite HS) is a returning All-CCAA runner for the Broncos, while Natalie Miano-Batres (Jr., Hacienda Heights, Nogales HS) has been the team’s No. 1 runner in three of the four meets so far this season. Karina Vega (Fr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS), who was injured last cross country season, has been the program’s most improved runner. The Cal Poly Pomona men’s team finished second in the CCAA, third in the West Region and 11th in the nation last year. The Bronco women were fourth in the conference and 12th in the region last season. The women are trying to reach the nationals for the first time since 1985.
